Understanding the ECVT System
The eCVT in the 2009 Altima Hybrid is not a standard CVT. Nissan licensed Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology for this vehicle, which means the transmission uses a planetary gearset—a Power Split Device—rather than the belt-and-pulley arrangement found in non-hybrid Altimas. There’s no torque converter, no fixed gear steps, and no dipstick anywhere in the engine bay. If you’ve only worked on conventional automatics, most of what you know about servicing them doesn’t apply here.
Finding the Drain and Fill Plugs
There is no fill tube running up into the engine compartment. The eCVT has two hex-head plugs on the transmission housing itself:
- Drain plug: At the bottom of the transmission, facing downward.
- Fill plug: On the side of the transmission housing, typically toward the rear on the passenger side.
Both plugs require a 10mm hex socket—sometimes called an Allen head or hex key socket. Don’t improvise. Using the wrong tool strips these plugs, and a stripped plug is a far more expensive problem than the fluid change itself.
What You’ll Need
- 10mm hex head socket and ratchet wrench
- Drain pan capable of holding at least 5 quarts
- Nissan Matic W ATF, part number 999MP-MTW00P (buy 5 quarts to have enough on hand)
- Funnel with a long, thin stem
- Rags or shop towels
- Jack and jack stands if you need extra clearance
- Safety glasses
The Drain and Fill Procedure
Step 1: Prepare the vehicle. Park on a level surface. Warm fluid drains faster and more completely than cold, so a short drive before you start helps. You don’t want scalding-hot fluid either—slightly warm is fine. Raise the car on jack stands if the transmission plugs aren’t easily reachable from underneath.
Step 2: Remove the drain plug. Position your drain pan under the lower plug, then turn counterclockwise with the 10mm hex socket. Slow down on the last few turns—fluid starts flowing the moment the seal breaks. Unscrew the remainder by hand. Give it several minutes to drain fully.
Step 3: Inspect the drain plug. While you wait, look at the plug. Many have a magnetic core. A thin film of fine metallic particles is normal; a clump of debris or larger metal pieces is worth a conversation with a transmission specialist before you close everything up.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug. Wipe it clean, thread it in by hand, then snug it down with the hex socket. Firm—not cranked. Over-torquing damages the threads.
Step 5: Open the fill plug. Remove the side plug with the same 10mm hex socket. Some residual fluid may drip out. That’s expected.
Step 6: Fill to overflow. Add fresh Nissan Matic W ATF through the fill hole. Go slowly—it’s easy to overpour if you rush. The fill method here is simple: keep adding fluid until it flows back out of the fill hole. That overflow is your confirmation that the transmission is full, no dipstick or level gauge required. You’ll typically use somewhere between 4 and 4.5 quarts, depending on how much remained after draining. Pour a quart, pause, continue. Patience here prevents overfill.
Step 7: Reinstall the fill plug. Wipe away any spilled fluid from the housing and the plug itself. Thread it in by hand, then tighten with the hex socket. Same torque rule: snug, not stripped.
The Fluid Type Is Non-Negotiable
Use Nissan Matic W ATF. The eCVT transaxle was engineered specifically for this fluid, and Nissan does not approve substitutes. Fluids marketed as “compatible” can cause transmission shudder, overheating, and accelerated internal wear. Get genuine Nissan Matic W (part number 999MP-MTW00P) or a fluid your dealer explicitly confirms is approved for the Altima Hybrid transaxle—not just any Nissan CVT fluid, and not generic ATF.
No Flush Machine Required
A drain and refill is the correct service method for this transmission. You don’t need a flush pump or any specialized shop equipment. The drain-and-fill approach replaces the majority of the working fluid and is the procedure Nissan recommends. Save the equipment rental fee.
When to Do This Service
Check your owner’s manual for your specific interval. Nissan’s general guidance for the hybrid eCVT is to inspect fluid condition every 30,000 to 60,000 miles and change it if it shows signs of degradation—dark discoloration or a burnt smell. Many owners do a full change preventively at 60,000 miles, particularly if the car has accumulated a lot of city driving or operates in a hot climate.
