What Apple Actually Announced at WWDC 2026: Hardware Rumors vs. Reality
WWDC 2026 delivered six new operating systems and a top-to-bottom Siri rebuild. No new hardware.
Apple opened its developer conference on June 9 with iOS 27, macOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27. The keynote ran long. Nearly all of it was software and AI.
The Software Lineup
Performance numbers led the pitch: photos appear in your camera roll 70% faster, AirDrop transfers run 80% faster, and apps launch up to 30% quicker. iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later — Apple called it the widest compatibility window of any iOS release to date.
Apple Intelligence Takes Center Stage
Apple Intelligence expanded across the default apps in ways that change daily use. Safari gets smart tab organization. The Passwords app can push a one-tap credential update to the relevant website automatically. Messages drafts replies that mimic your writing style. The Phone app pulls context from your Mail and Messages during a call. Shortcuts now accepts natural language prompts instead of requiring you to build logic by hand.
Photos got the most additions: a Reframe tool to adjust image perspective, an Extend tool that expands the edges of a photo, and an upgraded Cleanup tool for removing background distractions. Cross-app context awareness ties it all together, letting the system draw on information across multiple apps when responding to requests.
Siri AI: A Major Overhaul
This was the keynote’s real centerpiece. Apple rebuilt Siri on a custom Gemini model co-developed with Google — multiple reports put the licensing cost at roughly $1 billion per year. The result handles multi-turn conversations, pulls context from your on-device data, and can see what’s on your screen.
On iPhones with Dynamic Island, Siri now displays an animation at the top of the screen when activated. There’s a dedicated Siri app for browsing and continuing conversations, synced across devices via iCloud. On Mac, Siri lives inside Spotlight. The overhaul extends to watchOS 27 as well, bringing the same context-aware, conversational assistant to the watch.
One hard limit: Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require iPhone 16 or later, or a Mac or iPad running an M1 chip or newer. EU users face a delay while Apple works through Digital Markets Act compliance.
Parental Controls and Safety
Apple introduced mandatory child accounts for users under 13. Parents choose which apps a child can access at device setup, set time limits by category (games, entertainment, social media), and must approve Safari website visits before a child can open a new site. Contact approval is also new — kids can only reach contacts a parent has pre-approved via Phone, FaceTime, and Messages. Child accounts remain available as an option through age 18.
Search Rebuilt from the Ground Up
Spotlight, Mail, and Photos all got a new search foundation. Apple framed the change as a stability and speed fix rather than a visual one. The core promise: search that’s faster and more consistent across those three apps.
What About the Hardware Rumors?
The Mac Studio, Mac mini, Apple TV, and HomePod updates that rumor sites had tracked for months didn’t appear. This isn’t unusual — Apple regularly keeps hardware off the WWDC stage. Multiple reports suggest the Mac Studio is now targeting an October launch window after supply constraints pushed it back. The HomePod and Apple TV were reportedly held back until the Siri and Apple Intelligence improvements ship publicly this fall.
