Auto-Dimming Mirror Installation for XJ/ZJ/WJ Jeeps: Mirror Options & Wiring Guide
Auto-Dimming Mirror Installation for Jeep XJ, ZJ, and WJ Models
Upgrading to an auto-dimming rear view mirror is one of the simpler electrical retrofits for older Jeeps, yet the details matter. Most XJ Cherokees and WJ/ZJ Grand Cherokees can accept these mirrors with basic tools and a few hours of headliner work.
Common Mirror Options
The Gentex GNTX-177 is the most popular choice in the Jeep community. It’s a 7-pin mirror with compass and temperature display that originally came in mid-2000s Chevy and GMC full-size trucks. The brackets and glass fit directly onto XJ mounting points with no modification. You can identify a Gentex mirror by the “GNTX” etching on the lower front edge of the glass.
WJ Grand Cherokee auto-dimming mirrors (1999 and newer) also work well for XJ swaps. Since WJs are mechanically similar under the headliner, the wiring often drops straight in if your XJ has the harness already in place. This is rarer but when available, saves routing effort.
OEM Mopar mirrors using part number 68297611aa are another option, though they’re harder to source used and less commonly discussed in the retrofit community.
Wiring Basics
Most auto-dimming mirrors need just four to five wires: switched 12V power, ground, and the dimming sensor leads. Some mirrors include a reverse-light wire that disables dimming when backing up for better visibility.
Power typically comes from the overhead map light console or a keyed fuse output. The dark blue/white wire carries switched power (ignition on only), while black grounds to the chassis. Temperature sensor wires, if present, run forward to the grille area—usually zip-tied near the radiator support or by the driver’s side headlight.
A 1-amp fuse inline with the power wire is recommended. Most Gentex installations use 14-gauge wire for the main power run, though 16-gauge works for shorter routes.
Installation Step-by-Step
Remove the old mirror using a Phillips or Torx screwdriver. The new mirror mounts on the same bracket with the existing fasteners. This part takes five minutes.
Headliner work is where the job lives. You’ll need to carefully pull down the headliner to access the wiring channels above. Route the mirror harness along the headliner and down the driver’s side A-pillar, tucking it into existing wire paths or the seam between panels. Many installers take this opportunity to refresh a sagging headliner while they have access.
Once wires are routed, connect them at your power source. Press the “auto” button on the mirror—the green LED should light up, confirming proper power delivery. Test the dimming function with lights off, letting trailing headlights behind you test the photo sensor response.
Pre-Existing Harness Advantage
Some XJs and most WJs have a hidden harness tucked under the headliner, left over from factory options that were never ordered. If your vehicle has this connector waiting above the headliner, installation becomes plug-and-play. You can sometimes spot it by carefully peeling back the headliner or asking on a model-specific forum whether your year/trim typically includes it.
Common Issues and Solutions
The dimming coating can deteriorate over time, causing the mirror to “melt”—the dark tint pools at the bottom instead of spreading evenly. This usually means replacement is needed. OEM replacements run around $300.
Some aftermarket mirrors get excessively dark in bright daylight, requiring you to manually toggle the auto function off in mid-day conditions. This is a trade-off with cheaper mirrors; the Gentex 177 is more reliable here.
Torx fasteners can stick if your vehicle sits a while. Penetrating oil and patience work better than force; a stuck screw can strip the mirror bracket.
Wiring Harness Kits
Pre-made harness kits for Gentex mirrors include 7+ feet of wire, taps, and installation instructions. Verify connector type (7-pin vs. 16-pin) before buying—different mirror variants use different plugs. A quality kit costs $40–70 and saves troubleshooting time if you’re uncertain about wire gauges or tap placement.
