How to Fix Zoom Background Scrolling and Virtual Background Issues

Why Zoom Background Scrolling Stops Working

When you can’t scroll through Zoom’s virtual background library or browse custom images, the cause is usually one of a few common issues: disabled permissions, outdated software, conflicting virtual camera tools, or account-level settings restrictions. Reinstalling is one fix, but it’s worth trying faster solutions first.

Quick Fixes to Try First

Check Your Zoom App Version

Make sure your Zoom desktop client is fully updated. Background handling has changed in recent versions, and an outdated app sometimes locks the scrolling feature. Open Zoom, click your profile picture in the top right, select Settings, and look for any update notifications.

Verify Camera Permissions

Virtual backgrounds require Zoom to access your camera. If permissions are denied or revoked, the background library won’t load or scroll properly.

On Windows: Open Settings, select Privacy & Security, then Camera. Make sure Zoom is listed and the toggle is on.

On Mac: Open System Preferences, go to Security & Privacy, select the Privacy tab, click Camera, and ensure Zoom is checked.

Clear Zoom Cache

A corrupted cache can freeze the background scrolling interface. On Mac, quit Zoom completely, open Finder, press Command+Shift+G, paste ~/Library/Application Support/zoom.us, then delete the data folder. Restart Zoom and let it rebuild.

On Windows, close Zoom, open File Explorer, navigate to %AppData%\Zoom, and delete the data folder.

Check for Conflicting Virtual Camera Software

If you’ve installed OBS Studio, ManyCam, Snap Camera, or other virtual camera tools, they can conflict with Zoom’s background feature. Try disabling or uninstalling these tools, then restart Zoom and check if scrolling works again.

Account and Settings Level Fixes

Ensure Virtual Backgrounds Are Enabled

Your Zoom administrator may have disabled virtual backgrounds account-wide, or you may have turned them off locally. Sign into the Zoom web portal, click Settings, scroll to Meeting, and confirm Virtual Background is toggled on. Then sign out of your desktop app and back in for the change to take effect.

In the Zoom desktop app, click your profile picture, select Settings, go to Background & Filters, and choose anything other than None to enable the feature.

When Reinstalling Is Actually Needed

If none of the above works, a faulty installation may be the culprit. Uninstall Zoom completely—on Mac, also delete ~/Library/Application Support/zoom.us and ~/Library/Preferences/zoom.us—then download a fresh copy from zoom.com and reinstall.

When to Contact Zoom Support

If scrolling still doesn’t work after trying these steps, check whether your Zoom account has admin-level restrictions on virtual backgrounds. These settings override individual client settings. Contact your Zoom administrator or reach out to Zoom support if you need this feature unlocked at the account level.
