Lucid Air Cancellation and Refunds: What to Know About the August 2022 Tax Credit Deadline

Lucid Cancellations and the August 2022 Tax Credit Deadline: What Customers Need to Know

In August 2022, Lucid Motors sent customers an important message: if you placed an order before August 12, you could still qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. That deadline mattered because Congress had just passed the Inflation Reduction Act on August 16, which changed the rules dramatically. But months later, some customers who canceled their orders were finding their refunds stuck in limbo—and silence from Lucid’s customer service team.

The Tax Credit Timing and Why It Mattered

The Inflation Reduction Act, signed on August 16, 2022, restructured the $7,500 tax credit that had been available since 2009. The old credit—the one Lucid was referring to in its August 11 email—required only that you have a written binding contract before the deadline. You could take delivery months or even years later.

Once the new law took effect, however, the credit came with strict new requirements: the vehicle had to be finally assembled in North America, income caps applied, and there were limits on vehicle price. For many vehicles, including some Lucid configurations, the credit became much harder to qualify for.

That’s why Lucid’s message was so time-sensitive. If you had a contract in place before August 16, 2022, you could claim the old $7,500 credit when you eventually took delivery—assuming the car met the prior requirements, which were far simpler.

Lucid’s Stated Refund Policy

According to Lucid’s publicly available terms and their help documentation, the refund policy has two main stages:

  • Reservation stage: The initial $300 reservation payment is fully refundable if you cancel before confirming an order.
  • Order stage: Once you confirm an order, your deposit becomes an “Order Deposit.” If non-refundable, Lucid retains up to $1,000 or the full amount of the deposit, whichever is less, as liquidated damages.

For a $300 reservation payment converted to an order, the distinction matters. Lucid’s terms state that if you haven’t yet gone to production, the deposit should be refundable. But the terms also allow Lucid to keep part of it under “liquidated damages” if you breach the agreement or cancel.

To request a cancellation, Lucid directs customers to email [email protected].

The Gap Between Policy and Practice

What the policy says and what customers experience can be worlds apart. Since at least 2022, owners have reported significant delays in getting cancellation requests acknowledged, let alone processed. Response times that were supposed to be 2 hours have stretched to days or weeks. Some customers have sent multiple follow-up emails over the course of a month without hearing back.

This isn’t a small inconvenience. A cancellation request without a response leaves customers in a legal gray zone. You’re not sure whether Lucid received your request, whether they’re processing it, or whether they’re ignoring you intentionally. Your money sits frozen, and you can’t move forward.

Complicating matters further is the fact that some customers sent cancellations to their sales advisor or delivery advisor, not to the official reservations email address. Those requests often disappear without a trace.

What to Do If Your Cancellation Isn’t Being Processed

Document everything first. Collect copies of your original order confirmation, your cancellation email (or a summary of when and how you requested it), and any follow-up attempts. Note the dates, times, and names of anyone you contacted.

Send a formal cancellation request to the right address: Email [email protected] with a clear subject line like “Cancellation Request – Order #[your order number]” and include your order number, date of original order, date of the original cancellation request, and the amount of the deposit. Keep it brief and straightforward.

Follow up in writing. If you don’t hear back within a week, send a follow-up email (not a call, since you want documentation). Reference your first email and ask for written confirmation of receipt and an estimated timeline for processing.

Consider escalation if needed. Some customers have had success contacting Lucid through multiple channels—social media, the help center, or even corporate contact information if you can find it. The goal is to create a visible record that you’ve requested cancellation and haven’t received a response.

Know your card rights. If weeks pass with no response and no refund, you may be able to dispute the charge with your credit card issuer or bank. Many states also have consumer protection laws that allow you to dispute charges for services not rendered or products not delivered. Consult your state’s attorney general’s office for specific rules in your jurisdiction.

Why This Matters Beyond the Refund

A fast refund process isn’t just a customer service convenience—it’s part of honoring the contract. Lucid’s own terms say deposits are refundable in certain conditions. When Lucid neither acknowledges a cancellation nor returns the money, it creates a situation where customers can’t trust that the company will honor its obligations.

For someone who ordered before August 12, 2022, to secure the $7,500 tax credit eligibility and then had to cancel because the vehicle didn’t arrive, a refund delay compounds the disappointment. The tax credit opportunity is gone. The cancellation was made in good faith. And the money just sits there.

If you’re in this situation, the best defense is documentation and persistence. Make your request to the right place, in writing, and keep copies of everything. Lucid may eventually respond—many do—but silence doesn’t mean “no.” It often just means the company is understaffed and your email got buried.
