Hyundai Service Campaign 966: What the Knock Detection Update Actually Does—and Why Some Owners Report Infotainment Issues

What Is Hyundai Service Campaign 966?

Hyundai Service Campaign 966 is a free software update designed to improve the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS)—a technology that monitors your engine for early signs of bearing wear before severe damage occurs. The update modifies the engine control module (ECM) logic to detect abnormal engine bearing noise patterns that can develop as connecting rod bearings wear over time.

The system continuously monitors engine vibrations for unusual dynamic signatures. If dangerous wear is detected, the check engine light will blink continuously, an audible chime will sound, and the vehicle will enter Engine Protection Mode with RPMs limited to approximately 1800–2000 to allow safe driving to a dealership for diagnosis and repair.

Which Vehicles Are Covered

Campaign 966 applies to a broad range of Hyundai models built between 2010 and 2021. Affected vehicles include:

  • 2014–2016 Elantra
  • 2014 Elantra Coupe
  • 2014–2020 Elantra GT
  • 2010–2012 Santa Fe
  • 2011–2019 Sonata Hybrid
  • 2016–2019 Sonata Plug-In Hybrid
  • 2010–2021 Tucson
  • 2012–2017 Veloster

Your dealership can verify whether your specific vehicle and model year qualify by checking your VIN on Hyundai’s campaign website or through their customer service line.

Installation and Duration

The software update is performed free of charge at any Hyundai dealership and typically takes less than one hour. Dealers are required to perform a diagnostic scan to document the vehicle’s current status before and after the update. The entire service is covered—no out-of-pocket cost to the owner.

The Warranty Extension

This is a significant benefit. After the KSDS update is installed, Hyundai extends the Powertrain Limited Warranty specifically for engine-related repairs caused by connecting rod bearing failure. The extension is substantial: 15 years or 150,000 miles from the date of original retail delivery or first use, whichever comes first.

This extended coverage applies only to engine repairs or replacement directly caused by bearing failure and only after the Campaign 966 software update has been completed. It does not extend coverage for other engine components or unrelated systems.

Reports of Screen and Bluetooth Issues

Some owners have reported that after having Service Campaign 966 performed, their infotainment systems—specifically the touch screen and Bluetooth connectivity—stopped working. These were systems that functioned normally before the service visit.

It remains unclear whether these issues are directly caused by the KSDS software update itself or by other factors during the dealership visit. Possibilities include:

  • An unrelated glitch or failure in the infotainment system that coincidentally occurred during the service
  • A firmware compatibility issue between the new KSDS software and the vehicle’s infotainment system
  • Accidental disconnection of the infotainment module during diagnostic or update procedures

Hyundai’s technical documentation and dealer training materials do not currently mention infotainment system changes as part of Campaign 966. However, owners experiencing these issues should contact their dealership immediately and ask for documentation of what occurred during the service. If the issue arose during the appointment, request that the dealership investigate and repair it at no charge, even if the vehicle is outside the standard warranty period—particularly if the system was working when you dropped it off.

Before You Schedule the Update

Before bringing your vehicle in for the KSDS update, check the Hyundai website to confirm your model and year qualify. Keep records of any current issues (or lack thereof) with your screen, audio system, and Bluetooth. During the service, ask the dealership to document the pre-service state of these systems in writing. If any problems appear during or immediately after your appointment, report them to service before you leave—having them noted in the work order creates a record that the issue occurred during this visit.

The knock detection update itself addresses a real engine reliability concern, and the extended warranty is genuine value. Just be proactive about documenting your vehicle’s condition before and after the service.
